Why Programming Language “C” is Necessary For Mechanical Engineers

Learning computer programming is essential for engineering students these days. Various CAD and CAM softwares are to be handled by the engineers, as almost all the projects are designed with CAD software and CAM software and have a significant role in the manufacturing processes. There are many programming languages that need to be learned by the mechanical engineer students. These include FORTRAN, Matlab, C and C++ etc. How many of these may be taught to the aspirant mechanical engineers in only 8 or 10 periods allotted in the curriculum of undergraduate mechanical engineering courses? Then which language should be taught in this short duration?

Various programming languages are included in the curriculum of mechanical engineering courses. Assembly languages are taught to them to make them familiar with the hardware interface. C programming language is taught as structured programming language and is useful for developing the hardware interface applications. In the last year of the undergraduate mechanical courses C++, an objected oriented programming language is included. Which computer language should be emphasized on during this limited period?

No doubt, C language is must for all the mechanical engineer students. Matlab language used for mathematical programming was preferred since 1998 and was replaced by FORTRAN. The FORTRAN language ruined the mechanical engineering courses since 1998 and was one of the four languages for the undergraduate students of mechanical engineering. However the FORTRAN language was not capable of meeting all the needs of engineers and that was the reason the BC was introduced in the curriculum. It was learned from the experience that the student who were well versed in the programming with Malabo were not capable of handling research projects. So, in most of the academic institutions, the programming language BC was induced in the curriculum in 2003. Why “BC” was preferred over the other programming languages.

The reason is that the BC language supports 64-bit computing and adheres to the international standards that are supported by the major computing industry companies. On the other hand, Matlab is a proprietary language used in mathematical programming. Certainly the technology that is open to all is better than a proprietary of any one. Just guess the popularity of C. According to statistic shown by some reports, the language C holds the second position in Programming Community Index with 16.8 percent of the market, next to the Java, the another programming language used for E-commerce on the Internet. The Matlab is nowhere available in the index.

Why the programming language C is preferred for the mechanical engineer curriculum? The C language is much preferred language for hardware interfaces. This is the language that is used for the embedded software for the various home appliances. Did you ever realize this while changing the channels of your TV with your remote? May your wife know that she is using software written in C while using computerized washing machine or microwave oven?

How Do You Monitor Network Hardware?

A computer network is often a highly complex entity. There are scores of different hardware components that need to come together to form the actual network. Cables, controllers, modems, routers, and other hardware items would be part of this mix. Such a collective of network hardware must be assuredly monitored in order to ensure all systems are running effectively. There should be no concerns or weak links. Effectively monitoring network hardware is not complicated as long as you follow a few basic steps.

It’s easy to assume that everything is running smoothly and will continue to do so in the foreseeable future. This can prove to be an enormous error because once you have faltered on your monitoring duties you run the risk of seeing the system malfunction – which can in turn cause a whole host of issues. All the parts in the collective whole must function in a synergetic fashion. If not, then you will potentially experience serious problems and substantial down time.

Here is the proper way to monitor network hardware:

Preventive maintenance may be the key to eliminating problems. In particular, you will want to troubleshoot the drivers periodically. Are all the drivers that operate your hardware currently updated? It is incredibly prudent to update all drivers when necessary since this will eliminate any problems that might occur.

Often, simple visual inspections of main hardware items are the best starting point. The modem would be the first piece of equipment to examine. Are all the lights on and the appropriate lights solid or flashing? If not, you modem may be off, in need of being reset, or your internet connection may be down. The latter problem might be out of your hands but the other two can be easily addressed.

Any and all other external hardware items need to be inspected in the same manner. Upon the revelation that a particular item is broken or malfunctioning, you will need to replace it. Really, any hardware that is malfunctioning severely will be a drain on the network’s operational capabilities.

In a similar vein, you need to double check to make sure all Ethernet cables are properly connected. Loose connections will undermine your network’s ability to function since the hardware will be eliminated from the network without the appropriate connecting cables. If there are any visible signs of damage or wear then you might want to order replacements as a precaution.

A scan of your computer’s hard drive for errors, viruses, and other problems will eliminate most networking problems. The registry, in particular, can be a source of headaches when it is riddled with errors. How can you deal with these problems? Simple – run weekly virus, adware, spyware, and registry error scans.

This will locate and eliminate problems as they arise. Obviously, you would need to update all definitions on these programs to ensure they are 100% effective. Also, it would not hurt to run periodic disk defragmenting scans/repairs. This will further help your network run appropriately.

Monitoring the operation of network hardware is not all that difficult. It just takes proper due diligence and commitment to oversight. Those willing to accept the responsibility for performing these appropriate tasks will not have any problems.
